As life coaches… we can take a tip from the holidays.
That’s right… Thanksgiving can give us access to a powerful tool that we can utilize to help ourselves and our life coaching clients to be more productive AND happier.
Here’s the scoop:
Did you know that according to researchers like Psychologist Robert Emmons… developing a sense of gratitude is integral to our well-being.
In fact, Harvard Professor and author, Shawn Achor says,
“Countless studies have shown that consistently grateful people are more energetic, emotionally intelligent, forgiving and less likely to be depressed, anxious or lonely.
And it’s not that people are only grateful because they are happier, either; gratitude has proven to be a significant cause of positive outcomes. When researchers pick random volunteers and train them to be more grateful over a period of a few weeks, they become happier and more optimistic, feel more socially connected, enjoy better quality sleep, and even experience few headaches than control groups.”
That’s right.
Other research shows that developing a sense of gratitude can help to release chemicals in the brain like dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals help us to feel good but they also open up the learning centers in our brains… which help us to think more creatively, see more opportunities and focus.
Who doesn’t want more of that?
So… in the spirit of Thanksgiving… what if we asked some questions of ourselves and our life coaching clients that helped to stir up gratitude?
Questions like…
- What are 3 things you can feel grateful for in the last week?
- What are 5 things you could be grateful for from this year?
- What are 2 things you feel grateful for from what you experienced this week?
- As you think about your most recent breakthroughs, what are you most grateful for?
- As you think about some of the challenges you’ve faced in the past year… what’s one thing you can be grateful for?
Now… these are questions that we can ask of ourselves as life coaches to stir up a sense of gratitude… and help us get ready for a day of coaching calls.
But these are also questions you could ask as you are kicking off a coaching conversation with an “ally” (our word for client) to help them get in a stronger and more positive mindset.
What do you think?
What questions would you ask yourself to stir up a sense of gratitude? What questions might you ask one of your life coaching clients? Click on comments and let us know. We’d love to hear from you!
So… yeah… let’s stir up some gratitude in ourselves and our life coaching clients!
And in the process… we’ll also inspire more happiness… more optimism… and more focus.
And I don’t know about you… but I’d take more of those things at Thanksgiving time… and every other day of the year!
Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,
Mitch Matthews
