From time to time… we simply like to offer up a favorite coaching question.
Then we dissect it… just to offer some simple but powerful Elite Life Coach strategies.
So today’s favorite question is…
Describe a time when you faced a similar obstacle and you overcame it.
Okay… let’s break it down.
“Body of Evidence”
First of all, this is what we call a “Body of Evidence” Elite Life Coaching Question.
Well… it helps your coaching ally (our word for client) to start to build a body of evidence that will encourage and inspire them.
B.O.E. questions help them to remember times when they’ve faced similar situations and overcame them. Granted… your client may not have not come up against the exact same challenge in the past, but often times you can help them to think of a time (or multiple times) where they broke through a barrier… or got “unstuck” in the past.
And by remembering these wins… they can be bolstered as they prepare to face their current challenge.
Oh… we love to use the word “describe” to kick off a question.
Well… it helps your life coaching ally to move into story telling mode, instead of feeling like they’ve been put on the defensive. (For example, using words like “Explain” to kick off a question can make a client feel like they are being put on the spot.) This subtle word shift can inspire your client to look at the situation like a story and it might even allow them to look at it from a slightly different perspective as they tell you about it.
“It Holds Them As Capable”
In some ways… this question assumes the close. That’s right. It demonstrates that you believe your client has actually overcome obstacles in the past. And even when your client may not be able to think of an example right away, you can broaden out the question to something like…
Okay, describe a time when you overcame a challenge in the past.
This enables your client to start to think about those times they have broken through obstacles. And it also shows them that you believe in them and that you’re holding them as capable of breaking through barriers in the past… and in the here and now.
Yup… there’s a lot to be said for holding your life coaching client as capable… and they can feel a difference when you do!
So there you go. A favorite question… broken down.
Now, how might you tweak the question to fit you? Where might you use it? We’d love to hear from you. Simply click on comments and join in the discussion!
