How your connections can help you gain clients.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about making sure your offer is enticing to potential life coaching clients.

In the post… we talked about the 95/5 rule… and how you could apply it to:

  • complimentary coaching sessionsLife coach certification
  • an e-book
  • a podcast or an interview

But I want to add something to the discussion around utilizing offers to build relationships with new and current life coaching clients.

The concept: intentionally utilizing your network… as your “offer.”

That’s right… today’s strategy is short and sweet.



It’s all about intentionally connecting people to the people and the resources they need… in an effort to help them… and build a relationship with them.

As an example, here’s one of my favorite authors… Tim Sanders (author of “Love is the Killer App” and his most recent best seller… “Today We Are Rich.”) telling one of the most powerful networking stories I’ve ever heard. It’s the story of Elmer Letterman.

Great story… right?


How might you apply this idea?

I’ll admit… offering lunches every Friday might not work for you… but how could you take this idea of intentionally connecting people and apply it to your life coaching practice?

Think about it. How could you use your…

  • Email?
  • A local coffee house?
  • A blog?

How could you intentionally connect people… just to help them? How could you link people with the express purpose of building relationships?


I get that question a lot.

But I have to say that this strategy can help people who hate to network… especially if they are introverted or shy. Why? Well, this simple strategy helps to turn networking into a game. Instead of entering a room and figuring out how to connect with people and/or how to get the subject around to focus on you… this approach allows you to move around the room looking for people to connect.

Heck, it almost becomes a game of memory.

Do you remember “memory?” That childhood card game where you’d look at a series of cards laying face down. Then you’d pick one up and try to find it’s match among the other cards.

Well, you can apply this strategy as you move around a room or navigate a conference.

As you meet people, you can find out what they want to do or what they need. (Sure… some of it will apply to coaching but some might not.) But you’ll remember aspects from each person and then you can work to connect them with someone else in the room (or within your network), just to help them out.

It’s fun… especially for us introverts! (yes, I’m actually an introvert who’s learned to be extroverted). That’s right. It’s great because it gets the attention off of us and on to the people we’re meeting.

But then when you take that next step and connect people… Elmer Letterman-style… you can build relationships and the law of reciprocity may just kick in to help you to build your life coaching practice in the process.

I know it’s helped me beyond just about anything else I’ve done.
