As you know, we often field questions from people who are thinking about getting their life coach certification.

One of the questions is…

“What if I want to be a speaker along with getting my life coach certification?”

It’s a great question… and it’s a great opportunity.

LIFE COACH CERTIFICATION + SPEAKING = GREAT OPPORTUNITY!

Personally, I do a lot of speaking and I find that with each paid speaking gig… I also have the opportunity to connect with potential life coaching clients. Plus… it’s always fun to go beyond the one-on-one work of life coaching… and get to impact a larger audience.

But I have to say that one of my favorite aspects of having a life coach certification and speaking is… you can utilize life coaching strategies as you speak. And that increases your impact dramatically.

Let me give you an example.

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak to the International Association of Administrative Professionals. It was a great group and we were digging into strategies that help you to overcome worry and stress. Really… the concepts were self-coaching strategies that allowed to them to be aware of their self-dialogue.

As we worked together… I landed on one specific concept that the group loved.

GRATITUDE

As you may know… studies have shown that you can not only cultivate gratitude… but as you do… your body starts to produce increased levels of dopamine and serotonin. Now these bad boys are your body’s natural anti-depressants. They’ve also been shown to increase your ability to retain information and think more clearly.

For example, one study published in American Psychologist found that if participants in a study wrote down three good things each day for a week… they would be happier and less depressed.

In fact, this study continued on and found that if participants continued to look for three good things a day… they continued to be happier and less depressed at one-month, three-months and six-months!

The longer the person continued… the longer the effect. Even when the group stopped the daily exercise, researchers found that the “Gratitude Group” stayed happier and less depressed than the control group.

The conclusion from the study: Researchers found that the study group had trained their brains to look for things to be grateful for and that started to change the way they looked at the world. So this little exercise of writing down three good things… changed them on the inside (increased levels of dopamine and serotonin) and changed them on the outside (their view of the world).

COACHING STRATEGY AND SPEAKING:

I challenged them to think of three to five things that they are grateful for every day.

In other words… I asked them to ask themselves a coaching question every day.

What are three things that I’m grateful for… today?

I clarified that they don’t have to be HUGE things like trips to Disney World. And they don’t have to be wildly profound either. They can be simple things like a really good meal… a really good laugh with friends… or a really nice convo with a friend.

I told them that the key is they have to be specific.

You can’t just say… “I’m grateful for my family, my friends and my dog.”

You need to think about something specific. Like… “I’m grateful for my walk with my dog this morning. That made me laugh and feel good.”

But that’s it. Just three things.

Happy Furry Friday, folks! (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

That’s right… coach yourself to find…

Three specific things… daily.

And when they look for the good stuff… science says they start to pump their body full of the “good stuff.”

Plus, their brain will begin to get in the habit of looking for more good stuff… which will not only help them to feel happier… but it will also have a positive effect on their ability to perform, stay focused and remember stuff.

And heck… who doesn’t want more of that?

So… see how I did that?

I simply used a good coaching question and a specific strategy… and then equipped them to coach themselves.

It sounds simple… but in other ways it was revolutionary for them.

Plus, it really set up the opportunity to be able to talk about how I work with individuals one-on-one with the same types of strategies to help them to break through to new levels of performance, clarity and engagement.

Keep dreaming BIG and helping others to do the same,

It’s MYTH 12: You can be told how to coach.

Weird… right?

You might be thinking… “How could this be a myth? Isn’t a Life Coach Certification simply a life coach training with an exam at the end?”

Well… in some ways that’s true.

But the key difference is… you can’t simply be told how to coach.

You have to own it.

You have to take the ideas within a life coach training program… and make them your own.

Sure… you can learn life coaching strategies and techniques. There’s no doubt. However… unless you take the next step and “own” them… those theories and concepts just become useless baggage.

Let me give you an example. I recently met with a woman who was going through a different life coach certification program. It had been intense for her. Multiple live sessions. Time away. Loads of theory and coaching history. Lots of strategy and processes. In fact, it was obvious that this particular program put a high value on “information.”

Now, information can be good. But too much… can frankly get in the way.

Case in point… when we started to talk about prospective life coaching clients for her… I started to ask her about how she wanted to help people. She threw out some general ideas and I said, “Great. I like that. Now, let’s say one of these people agreed to a complimentary session with you. What would be the first two to three questions you’d want to ask them?”

Dead stare.

She had nothing. Her brain was spinning. She was processing all of that information. She was sorting through all that training. But she was stuck. She was stumbling to come up with her lead questions.

She hadn’t owned it.

All of that training was still data someone had presented. But she hadn’t found a way to make it her own. She hadn’t found the way she wanted to use it.

I will even say that she had practiced. But she had practiced in role play scenarios… tightly linked to the information as it was being presented. So when I started throwing out real-world scenarios… that weren’t linked to made up role plays… she was stuck.

Now… I will tell you that I got frustrated for her. (Not at her… for her.)

I said… “They didn’t help you beat your own “Intellectual Immune System.”

She looked at me with a puzzled face and said, “My Intellectual… what?”

I then explained my theory about how our intellect has a similar immune system to our body’s. Not… medically… but metaphorically. Basically, the idea is that intellect tends to reject things that come from outside us (even good ideas) over time… just like our body rejects much needed organ transplants… because they come from outside us.

Here’s a video from a recent TEDx event where I spoke in depth on the concept of the Intellectual Immune System:

So… again… here’s the key to overcoming this myth.

You can’t be “told” how to coach. Yes… you can be given useful information and strategies. (We do that in our training.) Yes… you can be given proven tools and processes. (We do that too.)

But… you can’t stop there. You can’t stop at information. You have to go a step further and ask yourself questions like…

How am I going to own this concept?

How could I adapt this strategy to fit my AVATAR (my ideal life coaching client)?

Where could I employ this strategy to help my AVATAR to achieve what they want to achieve?

Keep asking yourself those questions. Keep digging deeper. Keep owning it.

And as you do… you will start to beat your own Intellectual Immune System and the “information” will become your own. The techniques will become second nature. They will simply start to flow from you. Because… they are yours.

So beat this myth. Don’t just be “told” what to do. Own the solutions and beat your Intellectual Immune System!

As you do… you will set your own Life Coaching Clients to achieve the things they want to achieve!

Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,

Mitch Matthews

During our session… we would often feature different quotes to inspire new ideas.

One of the stand outs was this quote from St. Frances of Assisi-

“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”

I love this quote…

This is the kind of thinking that helped people like Walt Disney, Roger Bannister and Richard Branson do what they did/do.

And… I think this concept hit home as the new life coaches were thinking about all of the things they wanted to do after they completed their life coach certification.

In many ways… this is exactly what they were doing.

They were starting with their life coach certification, then they were putting their promotional blueprint in place (that’s something we cover in our training)… and then they were getting ready to break through to the impossible.

How about you?

What’s something that seems impossible today?

What’s something that might be necessary to make that happen?

What if you took a step towards that today?

Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,

Today… we’re dealing with Life Coach Certification – Myth 18.

Photo kudos: LoricWilson

MYTH 18: Practice makes perfect.

Sure. We’ve all heard this phrase but when it comes to life coaching and getting your life coach certification…

TRUTH: Practice creates habits.

And sometimes those habits can have a negative effect.

POINT ONE:

We all need to practice and most programs suggest finding a practice partner (or multiple partners) so that you can begin the process learning how to coach more effectively.

The key here is practicing utilizing life coaching concepts that you believe in. In some ways, this is obvious… right?

POINT TWO:

The life coach certification myth that exists around “practicing makes perfect” is more subtle.

But it’s dangerous.

In fact, if you practice this aspect wrong… it can kill your ability to ever grow a thriving coaching practice.

Here’s the scoop…

Most life coach certification programs have you practice with people. In fact, many programs say that you need to practice with 3, 5, 7 or more life coaching clients before you can charge for your life coaching services. The hidden problem is… that as you practice without charging clients a fee… you practice giving your coaching away… over and over again.

What does that do?

Well, at a sub-conscious level… that plants a seed that your coaching isn’t worth anything. Plus, in that process, you never practice verbalizing what your coaching is actually worth.

The result is… many coaches who have practiced with multitudes of clients never feel confident enough to eventually charge for their coaching (because they never practiced that part of the process).

So they wind up going broke… because they practiced the wrong things!

SOLUTION: The “Pay-it-Forward” Contract.

In our program, we give our participants a “Pay-it-Forward” contract to use with their practice partners.

The contract clearly describes their coaching package and assigns a value to their coaching.

Then the contract explains that the coach is going to “give” this coaching package to the recipient as part of their practice… as long as the recipient agrees to “pay-it-forward” to someone else. In other words, the person has to agree to give a gift of similar value to someone else in the future.

This way, the budding coach isn’t just practicing their coaching… they are practicing assigning a value to their coaching… they are practicing having people sign a contract… they are practicing closing on the “sale” of their coaching… right from the beginning.

So… when they have earned their life coach certification… and it comes time to launch their full coaching practice… they don’t have any trouble charging $1,500, $2,500 or more for their coaching packages. Because… they’ve been practicing that… all along.

Make sense?

So watch out for Myth 18… because if you practice giving your coaching away… over and over again… it will be almost impossible to charge for your services in the future. Because… practice made for some bad habits!

And hey… we are all about helping you to not only coach effectively… but also grow a successful and sustainable life coaching practice! You are going to bless people’s socks off when you coach them, and we believe that you should get compensated handsomely for that! (If you want to find out more about our programs, click here.)

So practice the right things… because that will make all the difference!

Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,

Mitch Matthews

For me personally, one of the “missions” that we started has been something we call the “BIG Dream Gathering.”

Well, as a part of these BIG Dream Gatherings, we often do podcasts with inspiring people.

Patricia Rossi - Etiquette Coach

MANNERS AND GROWING YOUR LIFE COACHING PRACTICE

Recently, I interviewed NBC Daytime’s National Manners Correspondent… Patricia Rossi about her new book, “Everyday Etiquette – How to Navigate 101 Common and Uncommon Social Situations.”

I wanted to interview Patricia… because she’s living her big dream.

But more importantly, I also wanted to talk with her… to get her advice on everything from navigating networking opportunities (even when you’re shy) to remembering people’s names.

I have to say that her insights were so helpful (and inspiring) that I just had to offer them here too because they are so applicable to the life coach who is wanting to build and grow a successful life coaching practice!

ANOTHER LOOK AT YOUR IDEAL COACHING CLIENT

Now, one of the other reasons I wanted to offer this interview here… is I wanted to inspire you with Patricia’s story.

Think about it. Like you… she’s a coach… but she has selected a specific niche and become a recognized leader in this area.

Now if you visit this blog often, you know that we talk about how important it is to think about your AVATAR and come up with an ideal client profile. We talk about how important this is in order to grow your practice! (Click here to read another post on this subject.)

But as you go through this process of figuring out who your ideal client is… and how you can reach them… it always feels like a bit of risk. Why? Well, when you decide on your ideal client, you also are deciding on who isn’t your ideal client. And as a result… you start to decide who you aren’t going to market your life coaching practice to. So yeah… walking away from potential business… always feels like a bit of risk.

BUT… getting clear on a specific group of people or a specific area… can also be wildly freeing! Because you can go after it with gusto! And that’s EXACTLY what Patricia has done.

She’s gone after the concept of manners and etiquette in a BIG way! In fact, her nationally syndicated “Manners Minute” airs weekly on a number of NBC, CBS, Fox and ABC stations. AND she’s Twitter‘s number 1 etiquette professional!

So… again… if you’re a new life coach going after your life coach certification and you’re beginning to get clear on who you want to coach… or what you want to focus on. Or you’re an experienced life coach who’s wanting to be more bold with your focus on an ideal client type or specific area… then let Patricia inspire you to continue on that journey!

So… give your own “Ideal Client” some additional thought… and be inspired by Patricia as you do!

By the way, join in the conversation. Leave a comment to answer either of the following questions:

What’s one of your favorite etiquette tips that help you to grow your life coaching practice?

Who would you love to coach… and/or what would you love to specialize as a coach?

Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,

I had one of those moments this morning. It was a moment of reflection.

And… I have to admit that back when I was getting my own life coach certification in 2002… I wouldn’t have even known that moments like this could happen.

Here’s the scoop:

First… the CD

I was sitting reading… and I popped in a new CD. It was a CD from one of my life coaching clients from last year.

Now, this was extra sweet because when we’d worked together… he’d been trying to get this CD done for years… but it hadn’t worked. Things had gotten delayed. Things had gotten complicated. But we had gotten to work together for three months last year. I had asked him some questions from our “Coach Mindset” Elite life coach training and life coach certification… and helped him to put together a plan that he owned. And as a result… there it sat… an amazing cd cover on my desk… and beautiful music coming from my speakers.

Then it started to hit me. I was a part of his journey.

Because I was his life coach… I had front row seats to his breakthrough.

The reflection continued.

I worked with someone else last year. We had spent time focusing on where she wanted to go in life. We got clear on what “ideal” looked like for her. We put a plan together.

There were some hard choices… and she made them. There were some risks… and she took them. And… those paid off.

What’s amazing is that now… she’s living more of the life she’d dreamed of.

And the kicker… I’ve been asked to talk at her wedding later this year. Pretty cool.

Now, I’ve got to say that back when I went through life coach certification, I dreamed of helping people to launch businesses and products. And I’m freakishly excited to say that I’ve been able to do that. I also dreamed of helping people to perform better at work… and I’m blessed to say that I’ve had clients quadruple their annual income as the result of working together.

But when you boil it all down… it’s these quite wins that I love the best.

They are the ones when a life coaching client breaks through something that’s been holding them back.

They achieve something that seemed impossible.

It may not make the front page of the newspaper.

It doesn’t land them on the Today show.

But it’s life changing for them.

Yeah… those are the things I love to help my own life coaching clients to experience.

And again… back when I was thinking about becoming a life coach… and researching life coach certifications… I didn’t know that’s how I would feel 10 years later.

But this morning… it sat in.

And it felt good.

How about you?

What are some of the things you love the most about being a life coach? Or… if you’re just getting started in your pursuit of getting your life coach certification… what can’t you wait to help your future clients achieve or experience? Click comments. We’d love to hear from you!

Thanks for allowing me to share my little epiphany with you. It was one of my own quiet little wins… but again… those are sometimes the best… right?

Keep dreaming BIG and helping others to do the same,

You know that we like to debunk myths. Whether it’s a myth about becoming a life coach or it’s a myth about a life coach certification.

We want to dig in and bring you the truth. Although… the truth might surprise you.

Today’s Life Coach Certification… myth 27… is no exception.

MYTH 27: My life coach certification will enable me to charge $150 to $250 an hour for my coaching.

Now… I can imagine that you might be saying… “YIKES! Are you saying that once I have my life coach certification… I won’t be able to charge $150 an hour?”

Well… in some ways… yes.

Let me explain why this is a myth. Recently, I was talking with one of our awesome participants in our life coach training and certification, and he asked…

“Once I have my life coach certification, will people really pay me $150 to $250 an hour to work with me?”

I think my answer surprised him. I said…

“Nope.” (As you can imagine… this made him stop in his tracks!)

Then I said…

“No, people don’t pay $150 to $200 an hour for life coaching. They pay $1500… $2500 or more… for the life transformation they experience over the course of the time they are working with you. This isn’t about your hourly rate. This is about the value that you bring as you work together.”

I continued…

“In my own life coaching practice… I don’t sell based on my hourly rate. Why? Well, when you state your rates… based on an hour of working with you… people start to do the numbers and compare what you make an hour to what they make an hour… and they’ll get stuck there. So I never talk about coaching in regards to hourly rates. I only talk about coaching in regards to packages.

That way, they will see the full pitcure. They’ll see that the value of working with me as their life coach… doesn’t just come from the hour they talk to me each week. The true value is going to come from the process. The work they do during each week. The breakthroughs. The accountability. The tools.

Yep. It’s never just about the coaching hour… it’s about the journey we’re going to take together.

And when they get clear on that… they get excited. In fact, I want my clients to be so clear on what we’re going to do as we work together that they are excited about writing that check.”

I explained that one of the biggest epiphanies for me as a coach was when I realized that my clients aren’t paying me for an hour of my time. Instead, I realized that they are investing in themselves.

As they write that check, they are also taking a stand for themselves that says…

I want to make the changes that I need to make in my life!

I want to experience life at a new levels!

I’m going to invest in myself so that I can turn a corner and achieve more!

This may seem like semantics or a twist on words but it’s not.

So many times, we can get tied up in how much we are getting paid as life coaches… or what our hourly rate is. But it’s not about that at all.

It’s about the overall experience and what it’s going to do in and for your life coaching client. It’s about the value you are going to bring… and it’s about the life changes that you will help your clients to achieve.

So… to review… do people actually pay people with a life coach certification $150, $200 and up for an hour of their time? Yes. It happens with our graduates all the time.

But as you go out and get your life coach certification (whether it’s from us or not), I encourage you to not think about it in this way.

I mean… yes… you need to get paid for your time… very well in fact.

And yes… coaches typically spend 1 hour each week with their client. But the value that you bring as an elite life coach far exceeds that hour that you spend with that coaching ally every week. The value also includes the tools that you bring to the table. The value you provide also includes the things that your coaching clients experience as they are working through their assignments and homework during their week. The value also includes the things that they learn about themselves and the ownership they experience with the solutions that you help them to discover.

So… don’t charge by the hour. Drop that thinking entirely.

Have your coaching clients think of their payment as an investment in themselves AND help them to know that they are taking a stand for their goals and dreams.

Make sense? I hope so.

I was having a conversation recently with someone who was thinking about life coach certification.

She had heard about life coaching and she was intrigued. She already seemed to “coach” most of her friends and people always seemed to be coming to her for advice or when they needed a sounding board.

The more she heard about life coaching and a life coach certification… the more it seemed to click with her.

More importantly… we were talking about how she longed…

Do something that she felt really mattered

Do something she felt passionate about

Do something in which she felt like she was using her gifts and making a difference

But… she was feeling overwhelmed. She described what she was feeling…

I’m excited about the idea of becoming a life coach, but I also feel like I’m standing at an intersection!

I’m really wanting to get started as a life coach… but I’m not even sure where or how I should take my first step.”

Sound familiar?

Well… I pointed her to a recent article that offers 4 Steps to Becoming a Successful Life Coach.

As she checked these out… and I think she was surprised. But based on her feedback… it sounds like they were wildly helpful.

So if you’re thinking about the same thing… and feeling the same way. Check out these 4 Steps.

We love to offer quotes to inspire life coaches and new life coaches who are just starting the process of getting their life coach certification.

Today’s life coach quote involves two of my favorite topics… asking questions and innovation.

Photo per shu is alive

“The question is not whether we are able to change but whether we are changing fast enough.” – Angela Merkel

This is a great question to pose to ourselves… as we are looking to grow our life coaching practices… or getting started with our life coach certification.

Some extensions of this thought might be…

Are we open to change?

Are we studying the ways our industry (life coaching) is evolving?

Are we studying other industries to be inspired to think differently about our own? (Innovating? Pushing? Growing?)

Are we trying new things as we work with our life coaching clients?

Are we trying new things as we promote our life coaching practices?

Plus, we could use Chancellor Merkel’s challenge to stretch our life coaching clients as well?

Are they clear on where they want to go?

Are they making the changes they need to make in order to achieve those goals?

Are they making those changes quickly enough?
