It’s Q and A time!

Here’s a question from someone who has been getting our emails but hasn’t participated in any of our coach training yet. She asks a great question… so I wanted to share it.

Hi Mitch
I have been journaling the questions on the mini course every day and I have gone through your video series you offer free. Thank you for making these tools available and your right it has gotten me very excited not only re: the prospect of becoming a life coach but re: your life coach training and certification as well.
One of your emails directed me to a blog post where you had said one of the most important coaching tools you ever used was the phone! What a revelation and I couldn’t agree more that with our time crunched society this would probably be the only way to help our Allies. I am wondering though if that would also be true for coaching teenagers? Would you counsel coaches to only coach over the phone or do you think they need a little more one on one? I’m kinda on the fence and wondered what you thought.
Big Fan
Lynn

Here was my response:

Lynn -

Great to hear from you!

Thanks for all of you kind feedback as well. That means a lot!

As for teens and using the phone for coaching… that is a good question.

In this case… I’d highly suggest experimenting. See what works best for you.

I haven’t had a lot of experience with coaching teens (other than our own kids)… but I’ve had a few young clients over the years. In a few cases, I decided to break with my norm of coaching via the phone and I chose to coach them face to face. In most cases… I found that they actually needed someone to sit across from them, look them in the eye AND show them that I was visibly engaged.

I don’t find that adults need that as much.

In fact, most of my (adult) clients find it very safe to talk via a phone call… where they can find a setting that works for them where they don’t have to worry about being interrupted or overheard.

But… with many of today’s teens… they NEED to see the engagement. They can’t just hear it. They need to see it.

So yes… I’d say if you’re feeling called to work with teens… experiment with it and see what works best for you.

Image via CrunchBase

One last thought… is that using the phone and/or technology… does expand your potential reach. For example, since I do all of my coaching via the phone… I can work with anyone in the world. I’m not limited by any kind of geographical restrictions. So one additional “experiment” that you might want to try is using technology like SKYPE. That way your teenage client could “see” you but you wouldn’t be limited by only working with young ones in your area.

(One word of caution though… as you know… some kids have been brought up on tech. So you might need to think of some ways to make them comfortable but at the same time… not have them check out due to a conditioned response to looking at computer screens. BUT… again… it’s certainly worth some experiments to see what works best for you and the kiddos you’re feeling called to!)

Keep up the good work and thanks for the great question!

I hope that helps!

Talk soon,

Mitch

And… I hope that helps you too!

How might you experiment with your potential coaching clients? What tools might you try? Join in the conversation. Comment and let us know.

Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,

Mitch Matthews

She’s a self-proclaimed “accidental entrepreneur.” She has gone from launching a successful freelance writing business at the young age of 23 to developing a healthy speaking career. Then she uncovered a true passion for helping people to live lives where they accomplished more while experiencing more peace and less stress.

In fact, she now coaches clients from around the world and has become a recognized expert in time management… err… I mean “TIME INVESTMENT.”

That’s right.

Elizabeth is quick to offer clarification that she doesn’t promote “time management.” Instead she believes in what she calls “time investment.” In fact, she helps audiences, organizations and individuals master these concepts.

And recently… she published a book on this very topic.

It’s called…

“The 3 Secrets to Effective Time Investment – How to achieve More Success with Less Stress.”

The book is is designed to help readers overcome the frustrating cycle of exhaustion and overwhelm. Elizabeth introduces unique time investment and work-life balance paradigms and reveals how to experience lasting change. The book also includes 40+ ready-made routines on topics like clearing email, meeting deadlines, going to bed on time, exercising, and maintaining friendships plus a step-by-step guide to creating customized routines. Plus, the book explores how to go beyond managing your time to effective time investment so you can not only keep up with life but enjoy the process.

Well… recently I was able to catch up with Elizabeth and we were about to talk about her journey to becoming a coach as well as her process for uncovering her true passions and finding her ideal coaching clients. Plus, we dive into the subject of her book and talk about specific strategies that any new or established life coach could apply in their own life… let alone help their clients apply as well.

Enjoy the interview below:

If you’d like to find out more about Elizabeth’s coaching practice, simply click here.

If you’d like to read one of Elizabeth’s recent posts in the Harvard Business Review, simply click here.

Oh… and just as a fun back story… Elizabeth was a part of our initial offerings of the Coach Mindset. That’s right. She was one of the first graduates of our Elite Life Coach Training and Certification back in 2007. So it’s fun to see how she has taken this and truly made it her own.

Needless to say, we’re very proud of Elizabeth AND we can’t wait to see where she goes next!

No matter what… we know that she’ll be impacting the globe and making it more brilliant and less stressful as she goes!

Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,

I’m often asked by new (as well as established) life coaches… “How can I promote my life coaching (or my business coaching) practice?”

Some have small budgets… some have significant funds to put behind their promotional efforts… but either way… people are looking for effective and powerful ways to get the word out about what they do.

My first response is a combination of two questions…

Who is your AVATAR?

In other words… who is your ideal life coaching client? Who do you do your best work with? Who do you love to help? Who do you want to build your life coaching practice around?

Who else serves them?

In other words… who offers other products or services to your ideal client? Who’s helping them in a different way?

Then… I ask a third question…

How could you partner with them?

In other words… where there might be opportunities to help each other as you serve your AVATAR… and… in the process… get the word out about what you do!

A CASE STUDY:

Let me offer up a specific case study from my own life coaching and business coaching practice.

One of my AVATAR profiles (my ideal clients for coaching and speaking) is the person who needs to dream and think bigger. They need to innovate and develop new solutions. Whether it’s for themselves or their organization… they need to shift their thinking process… look for new opportunities… and then pursue them.

In my area… there is a community college that is freakishly innovative. In fact, they are nationally recognized for their cutting edge strategies… they are at the center of innovation for our region… AND each year… they shut down classes for a week to have “iweek.”

During that week… they bring in various speakers and leaders to celebrate and study innovation.

All that to be said… we have a similar AVATAR. We serve that AVATAR in different ways… but our approaches compliment one another.

So… over the past few years… I’ve partnered with them on iweek.

Initially… I connected with the leader of iweek through a mutual friend. Then we talked shop and compared notes on our approaches to innovation. Then I offered to do a breakout session for iweek… for free. Again… I was looking for the win-win. (I don’t do much speaking for free anymore… but this was a great opportunity to get in front of a room of my AVATAR and help an organization that helps my AVATAR… so again… WIN-WIN!)

That went well… so our partnership has grown. We’ve collaborated on more and more projects.

For example, an article I wrote on innovation was just featured in a quarterly magazine that they publish that is delivered (n some cases… hand delivered) to the desks of key leaders in my region. Plus, it’s available online too. To read the article… you can click here.

Now… have I been paid for these efforts? Nope.

But has it been a WIN-WIN? Absolutely!

I’ve gained new clients (both coaching and speaking) from this activity, I’ve been able to grow as a local authority on the subject and I’ve been able to develop other freakishly cool relationships through this collaboration.

So I’m grateful… and excited.

I’m grateful for the business and the relationships.

I’m excited for what it’s done for my business. AND I’m excited because this is a strategy that YOU can use too!

THINK ABOUT IT…

Who also serves your AVATAR… your ideal client?

How might you partner with them to help them… expand your reach and grow your business in the process?

Give it some thought… and just see where it takes you.

Then… let us know what you come up with.

Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,

Mitch Matthews

“What’s something that dramatically increases your life coaching client’s chances for success?”

Now that’s a great question!

My response…

“Clear Expectations.”

Now… we all love clarity. And this is especially the case when we’re talking about expectations.

Maybe that’s why I loved this sign so much when I saw it…

Ahhhhh clear expectations.

Now… how do you establish “clear expectations” with a life coaching client?

Let me give you two quick tips.

One involves a tech tip. The second involves a question.

First… the tech tip: Mind Mapping Software

When you’re working with a life coaching client… use some mind mapping software.

Mind Map

It will help you to stay engaged in the conversation, but it will also give you something to send when you’ve wrapped up with your life coaching client.

I can tell you that I do this with all of my own clients and they love them because they function as a mile marker for their progress… and they help to capture the specific homework the client has agreed to for the week.

As you can see… at the bottom of the map… I always wrap up with a specific walk through of the life coach assignment for that week.

You can find loads of different options when it comes to using mind mapping software. My favorite is from Mindjet… but it will cost you.

You can also find a free version from Xmind.net.

But just google “mind mapping software” and you’ll find plenty of options!

Second… the question: “What does success look like?”

We talk about this question a lot in our life coach certification.

Why? Well… it helps to bring clarity.

It helps to bring clarity to a bigger vision. For example, when people are talking about what they want their life to look like… you can ask a follow up question to the tune of… “So what would success truly look like for you?”

But when it comes to weekly homework… you can also ask this type of question.

So let’s say that your life coaching client has decided that they was to make more sales calls… or exercise more… or relax more. You can follow up with “Okay… so if that’s your goal… what would success look like?”

They may come up with a specific number of calls… or a certain amount of time in the gym… or some specific activities that they are going to do to actually relax.

Hey… you could even give this a try. If you are giving serious thought to Life Coach Certification… then ask yourself this same question.

“When I’m done with Life Coach Certification, what will success look like?”

Is it a certain number of clients? Is it having your full business up and running? Is it a feeling of deep satisfaction because you’re making an impact?

You decide.

But as you do… that clarity will help to guide you… motivate you… and push you.

So stay with it and see where these strategies take you!

Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,

Mitch Matthews

Hey gang…

We’re doing some fun things to spark some BIG dreaming this week!

Why?

Well… as I’m seeing Christmas decorations in stores… I’m reminded that we don’t have much time left on 2012.

Click here to find out more about IGNITE!

If you’re like me… you started the year with some big (and small) goals and dreams in mind. Things you wanted to knock out of the park THIS YEAR!

Here’s the thing… I’m betting that you’ve nailed some of those things.

BUT… again… if you’re like me… there’s still a few things that you’re wanting to get done in 2012! So… let’s go after that together!

AND… hey… if you haven’t given yourself permission to dream big for a while… I want to give you the opportunity to that too.

Plus… we at the Coach Mindset – Elite Life Coach Training and Certification… just want to have a little fun in the process.

GIVING IGNITE AWAY!

So… this week… I’ll be asking you some questions via my facebook page and each day… we’re going to give a copy of my book IGNITE – A Little Book to Spark Your BIG Dreams away!

That’s right.

Monday through Friday… I’ll be asking you a question that might spark some big dreaming (for yourself or others)… and then you can comment on the post.

When you do… you’ll be put into a drawing.

At the end of each day… we’ll randomly pick a winner and that person will receive a signed copy of IGNITE!

Sound cool?

HOW CAN IGNITE HELP?

For those who don’t know about IGNITE… I’ll give you the quick skinny on the book.

In IGNITE… I teamed up with Visual Artist Jocelyn Wallace to create a reading experience.

As a result, the book is filled with coaching questions, stories and strategies to get you thinking about some of your big dreams as well as strategies to help you put a simple but powerful plan together to achieve your goals and dreams.

PLUS… the book is jam packed with Jocelyn’s freakishly cool original photography and design to spark creativity, fun and inspiration!

So… when you’re done reading IGNITE… you’ll have a smile on your face AND a plan in your back pocket.

Sound good?

WELL… LET’S GET TO IT!

Be watching for the questions on my Facebook page this week.

When you see ‘em… post a response and put your name in the hat to receive a free signed copy of IGNITE!

Let’s get to thinking about some of our big dreams… and let’s inspire some other peeps to do the same.

Sound good?

Can’t wait!

It’s going to be a GREAT week,

You know that we love to answer your questions about life coach certification, life coach training… AND developing a successful and sustainable life coaching practice.

Today’s question comes from a budding life coach named Chris…

Hey there –

Just curious how it breaks down for you in regards to where your business is mostly coming in from…referrals, emails, incentives, events, etc.???

What are your strongest more successful promo tools and why?

Thanks!

As you may or may not know… in addition to offering “The Coach Mindset – Elite Life Coach Training and Certification,” I also maintain a very active life coaching practice myself.

I know a lot of former coaches who have developed training programs… and then stopped actively coaching their own clients. But I’ve just found that by sustaining my own life coaching practice… it helps me to keep things fresh and stay on top of the newest trends in life and business coaching.

So… here was my very real world response.

Great question Chris.

Believe it or not… I’d say “yes.”

That’s right.

I use all of them. Now… some months I use one more than the others.

For example, one month I might have several speaking engagements. So I’ll generate new business from those. Other months I’ll go lighter on the speaking (due to other parts of my business) so I’ll rely more heavily on my emailing and/or social media activities.

But hey… let’s just get specific.

Just to give you an idea… in this past month…

One new ally (My word for client) came from a referral from a friend, one new ally came from a speaking engagement (this new ally’s spouse was on the planning committee and had him reach out to me before I even spoke at the event!), and one new ally came from a former ally’s referral. (This last one was helped along by some of my recent emails and social media activities though.)

Now… I also have to say that a couple of my speaking gigs from this past month came from former or current coaching relationships. (So the speaking can feed the coaching… and the coaching can feed the speaking.)

Next month’s prospective new allies have come from a referral from a fellow speaker, another from some of my Facebook activities and and another came from some of my other email/social media activities.

The key is to start one and get relatively consistent at it. (Notice I didn’t say perfect at it… just “relatively consistent” at it.) Then add the next and the next.

So… for example… don’t try to master mass e-mails and Facebook and Twitter in the first month. Pick one and start to work that muscle. Then get consistent at it and add the next. I’ve seen way too many coaches try to go after all of it right from the start. But then they get overwhelmed and they stop all of it just as quickly.

Instead… start slow and consistent.

Now… I will say that the emails and the social media activities are the easiest to plan for and schedule. The speaking gigs and events may be a little out of your control and inconsistent in the beginning. So really establish a plan for your email and social media stuff and start to walk those out.

Then do your best to capitalize on your speaking and events by making it VERY easy for participants to follow up with you!

So… yes… I guess the “combo platter” is always the clear winner because having a number of different conduits of business allows for any one conduit to ebb and flow.

This diversified approach also helps to eliminate a lot of the peaks and valleys that just relying on one conduit can cause.

I hope this helps!

Keep dreaming BIG and helping others to do the same,

Mitch Matthews

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about making sure your offer is enticing to potential life coaching clients.

In the post… we talked about the 95/5 rule… and how you could apply it to:

complimentary coaching sessions

an e-book

a podcast or an interview

But I want to add something to the discussion around utilizing offers to build relationships with new and current life coaching clients.

The concept: intentionally utilizing your network… as your “offer.”

That’s right… today’s strategy is short and sweet.

LIFE COACHING and NETWORKING

It’s all about intentionally connecting people to the people and the resources they need… in an effort to help them… and build a relationship with them.

As an example, here’s one of my favorite authors… Tim Sanders (author of “Love is the Killer App” and his most recent best seller… “Today We Are Rich.”) telling one of the most powerful networking stories I’ve ever heard. It’s the story of Elmer Letterman.

Great story… right?

HOW ABOUT YOU?

How might you apply this idea?

I’ll admit… offering lunches every Friday might not work for you… but how could you take this idea of intentionally connecting people and apply it to your life coaching practice?

Think about it. How could you use your…

Email?

A local coffee house?

A blog?

How could you intentionally connect people… just to help them? How could you link people with the express purpose of building relationships?

WAIT… WHAT IF I HATE TO NETWORK?

I get that question a lot.

But I have to say that this strategy can help people who hate to network… especially if they are introverted or shy. Why? Well, this simple strategy helps to turn networking into a game. Instead of entering a room and figuring out how to connect with people and/or how to get the subject around to focus on you… this approach allows you to move around the room looking for people to connect.

Heck, it almost becomes a game of memory.

Do you remember “memory?” That childhood card game where you’d look at a series of cards laying face down. Then you’d pick one up and try to find it’s match among the other cards.

Well, you can apply this strategy as you move around a room or navigate a conference.

As you meet people, you can find out what they want to do or what they need. (Sure… some of it will apply to coaching but some might not.) But you’ll remember aspects from each person and then you can work to connect them with someone else in the room (or within your network), just to help them out.

It’s fun… especially for us introverts! (yes, I’m actually an introvert who’s learned to be extroverted). That’s right. It’s great because it gets the attention off of us and on to the people we’re meeting.

But then when you take that next step and connect people… Elmer Letterman-style… you can build relationships and the law of reciprocity may just kick in to help you to build your life coaching practice in the process.

I know it’s helped me beyond just about anything else I’ve done.

Join in the conversation…

Jump in the discussion. Let us know how you might apply this idea by clicking on comments! We’d love to hear from you.

Keep dreaming big and helping others to do the same,

Mitch Matthews

PS – Speaking of offers…

If you’ve already decided you want to become a life coach… but you’re not sure where or how to get started with your training or with getting certified as a life coach… check out of FREE video series that will help you to do just that!

Now… this might seem like a little bit of a departure from my normal subjects of coaching and dreaming bigger… but in actuality… coaching concepts are at the heart of each of these solutions.

And this topic has now become a HUGE part of my speaking and consulting business… so I want to share these ideas with you!

I can’t wait to see you there!

I thought it might be interesting for you to see some real world interaction between someone who is going through the Life Coach Certification and me.

Here’s Life Coach Certification Participant’s question(s):

I’m working with a practice life coaching client who I’ve helped to clarify her goals.

She seemed energized and established 2 small but significant steps towards gaining even greater clarity. Because she is out of work and has had and lost several jobs. As a result, she is “desperate.” She was late to our second session, missed our 3rd session and was on time today.

We reconnected and re-established her big goal ( to be financially independent) but today she told me in great detail why that goal of being a __________ is everything she doesn’t want it to be, yet she is planning on pursuing this!

Can you share your experience with clients who define their goals yet also define why in reality it has so many elements that wouldn’t suit them ( according to them.)

Here’s my response…

Good stuff! Loads of lessons to be learned here. First of all, it really sounds like you are doing a great job with her… so keep practicing! You’re doing a great job.

I’ll just touch on a few things here.

First of all, since she is a practice partner, I’m guessing that she is not paying for the coaching (or maybe only paying a little bit). If that’s the case, that can be a big contributing factor towards her missing calls. Trust me… when clients pay for their coaching, they have true skin in the game and they are MUCH less likely to miss calls. That’s just the nature of the process when you are practicing. Now, you can sure talk with her about what she needs to do to protect the time and follow through, but just know that challenge will diminish greatly when people pay for the coaching.

Secondly, we want people to dream big and at the same time navigate the realities of their current situation. So, if she truly is strapped financially, this may not be the right time for her to launch a business. (Now, it’s up to her and we can sure hold her as capable because other people have launched businesses with little to no funds. However, this does make things much harder to do and means she’s going to have to work exponentially harder to achieve it.)

Now… one strategy that you could employ that would still allow her to “own” her solution is to introduce another expert into the situation.

For example, I might say, “Financial guru and straight shooter Dave Ramsey might say to you in this situation that you’d need to get another job and grow your business as a personal trainer on the side. He’d recognize that this would be hard work, but it would allow you some breathing room and allow you to put food on the table as your business grows. Now… what do you think of that? What do you agree with this that approach? And what do you push back on?”

This elite life coaching approach allows you to interject a strategy but still puts the decision making and the commitment on her.

She may totally agree with it and then you’d help her to adapt her plan accordingly.

Or she may push back and believe that she’d be willing to work hard enough to launch her business.

Either way… this strategy might help her to get even more clear on her plan and recommit.

She’s got a hard road ahead… but that’s because she’s an underfunded start up. Now… some of the best American business stories get started as “underfunded start ups” but she’s got to know that it’s gunna take a LOAD of work.

But help her to get clear on that and help her to decide on the road she chooses.

However, in the end… you can’t do it for her. That’s on her. Your job is to help her get clear on where she wants to go and to hold her accountable to the plan in the way she wants to be held accountable.

So keep up the good work and let us know how it goes!

Here’s our Life Coach Certification Participant’s response to my response (Geeesh… there’s a lot of responding going on here. )

Thank you for this awesome response.

You are correct about her being pro bono and in fact, I started with her before I had a coaching agreement in place. I immediately recognized how one minimizes the value of something for which they are not paying. I will always send agreements in advance now!

Subsequently she has asked if I could work with her daughter.

My first question was did her daughter express an interest in being coached!

I have established boundaries and indicated that I have a waiting list for pro bono coaching. She is willing to relinquish her sessions for her daughter. I can tell I am truly coaching, because she mentioned that she missed talking to me as a friend, (ie meaning the one who listened sympathetically and gave opinions but who didn’t ask powerful questions.)

I will let you know what changes occur and I agree with you about recognizing conflicts that prevent one from having greater success. I was treading lightly on suggesting things, however, introducing another expert to allow her to explore that as a question is a great idea!

Thanks for reminding me of this tool.

That’s it.

I thought you’d dig it.

As you know, we often field questions from people who are thinking about getting their life coach certification.

One of the questions is…

“What if I want to be a speaker along with getting my life coach certification?”

It’s a great question… and it’s a great opportunity.

LIFE COACH CERTIFICATION + SPEAKING = GREAT OPPORTUNITY!

Personally, I do a lot of speaking and I find that with each paid speaking gig… I also have the opportunity to connect with potential life coaching clients. Plus… it’s always fun to go beyond the one-on-one work of life coaching… and get to impact a larger audience.

But I have to say that one of my favorite aspects of having a life coach certification and speaking is… you can utilize life coaching strategies as you speak. And that increases your impact dramatically.

Let me give you an example.

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak to the International Association of Administrative Professionals. It was a great group and we were digging into strategies that help you to overcome worry and stress. Really… the concepts were self-coaching strategies that allowed to them to be aware of their self-dialogue.

As we worked together… I landed on one specific concept that the group loved.

GRATITUDE

As you may know… studies have shown that you can not only cultivate gratitude… but as you do… your body starts to produce increased levels of dopamine and serotonin. Now these bad boys are your body’s natural anti-depressants. They’ve also been shown to increase your ability to retain information and think more clearly.

For example, one study published in American Psychologist found that if participants in a study wrote down three good things each day for a week… they would be happier and less depressed.

In fact, this study continued on and found that if participants continued to look for three good things a day… they continued to be happier and less depressed at one-month, three-months and six-months!

The longer the person continued… the longer the effect. Even when the group stopped the daily exercise, researchers found that the “Gratitude Group” stayed happier and less depressed than the control group.

The conclusion from the study: Researchers found that the study group had trained their brains to look for things to be grateful for and that started to change the way they looked at the world. So this little exercise of writing down three good things… changed them on the inside (increased levels of dopamine and serotonin) and changed them on the outside (their view of the world).

COACHING STRATEGY AND SPEAKING:

I challenged them to think of three to five things that they are grateful for every day.

In other words… I asked them to ask themselves a coaching question every day.

What are three things that I’m grateful for… today?

I clarified that they don’t have to be HUGE things like trips to Disney World. And they don’t have to be wildly profound either. They can be simple things like a really good meal… a really good laugh with friends… or a really nice convo with a friend.

I told them that the key is they have to be specific.

You can’t just say… “I’m grateful for my family, my friends and my dog.”

You need to think about something specific. Like… “I’m grateful for my walk with my dog this morning. That made me laugh and feel good.”

But that’s it. Just three things.

Happy Furry Friday, folks! (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

That’s right… coach yourself to find…

Three specific things… daily.

And when they look for the good stuff… science says they start to pump their body full of the “good stuff.”

Plus, their brain will begin to get in the habit of looking for more good stuff… which will not only help them to feel happier… but it will also have a positive effect on their ability to perform, stay focused and remember stuff.

And heck… who doesn’t want more of that?

So… see how I did that?

I simply used a good coaching question and a specific strategy… and then equipped them to coach themselves.

It sounds simple… but in other ways it was revolutionary for them.

Plus, it really set up the opportunity to be able to talk about how I work with individuals one-on-one with the same types of strategies to help them to break through to new levels of performance, clarity and engagement.

Keep dreaming BIG and helping others to do the same,
